Aquiline Exits Marosa to Wolters Kluwer

The acquisition of Marosa by Wolters Kluwer concludes Aquiline’s first investment in Spain

NEW YORK, August 17, 2026 – Aquiline has sold its stake in Marosa to Dutch multinational Wolters Kluwer.

Marosa is a Vigo, Spain-based VAT compliance and e-invoicing company serving enterprise and eCommerce clients across Europe. The sale follows a two-year investment period from Aquiline’s Venture fund, led by Head of European Venture, Giovanni Nani.

In 2020, Aquiline began building a thesis around VAT compliance for cross-border commerce in Europe. The regulatory environment was shifting, driven by initiatives such as ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age), real-time reporting requirements, and e-invoicing mandates expanding across the continent. Compliance obligations were becoming more complex for enterprises, widening the gap between what businesses needed and what existing solutions offered. Aquiline identified an opportunity to bridge this gap with a technology-first service solution.

While mapping the market, Aquiline identified Marosa as the market leader – a bootstrapped, profitable business that Founder and CEO, Pedro Pestana da Silva had grown from his apartment to now serve global enterprises. From 2020, Aquiline tracked the company for several years while cultivating a relationship with Pedro and in 2024 became Marosa’s first outside investor. Over the following two years, the team helped Pedro institutionalize the company’s go-to-market function, expand the product across the tax value chain and produce a stable platform upon which the business is well-positioned to continue growing geographically and via expansion of product offering.

After discussions with Wolters Kluwer in June 2025, Aquiline facilitated their introduction to Marosa – which presented a highly complementary offering to the current Wolters Kluwer proposition. The acquisition of Marosa adds European VAT compliance and e-invoicing functionality to Wolter’s Kluwers’ already global reach and a strong position in US sales tax and VAT determination. The combined business is well-situated to continue building a global indirect tax platform.

Giovanni Nani, Head of European Venture at Aquiline, said:

“Working alongside Pedro and the Marosa team, we provided institutional support, network access, and go-to-market thinking to help accelerate Marosa’s growth. During our time together, we leveraged our strategic network to position Marosa for a successful exit, understanding the pain point that Marosa solves within the wider market, and therefore its eventual value to a larger strategic acquirer. Wolters Kluwer’s acquisition is a validation of the thesis and a testament of the quality of the business that Pedro and the entire Marosa team have built.”

Pedro Pestana da Silva, Founder and CEO of Marosa, said:

“Aquiline’s support over the past two years proved instrumental in accelerating our growth and expanding our ambitions. We are grateful for the strategy and long-term thinking they brought to our business, and we are proud of what we built together.”
